Everything you need to know about the Medicine Buddha

The Medicine Buddha, named in Sanskrit “Bhaishajyaguru” (translating as “master healer), is a Buddhist deity part of the Mahāyāna stream of Buddhism. As its name suggests, it is associated with healing, whether for spiritual or material problems.

She becomes Bodhisattva thanks to the 12 vows she pronounces, which express her desire to heal and save. Subsequently, the Medicine Buddha became a popular deity in China, Japan and Tibet.

We can recognize a Medicine Buddha statue thanks to two elements:

• A bowl with a healing potion held in his left hand
• An outstretched right hand holding an arura branch (a great natural remedy)

The sculptures representing the Medicine Buddha are sometimes blue in color and we find the deity in a meditation position.
